Every product packaging design journey begins with a conscious decision to mix things up. Whether it be product branding, colourways or material design; the reasons can be countless but the process remains the same.

So how exactly does a creative packaging agency get from A to B? Let us enlighten you, with our step by step guide to product packaging design perfection.

Step 1: Concept

This can be one of the most crucial aspects of the product packaging journey. This isn’t just the trendy blue sky thinking you’d normally associate with creative agencies. Its where we ask commercially minded questions such as what are the products unique selling points, how should they be displayed in the design, what’s the overall product messaging? This needs to be understood by the whole team before we can move on.

Step 2: Design

Here we translate the concept into tangible factors that embody the brand identity. We consider typography, colours, art working and imagery digging into the details of the brand to create something visual that will attract the target market.

Step 3: Artwork

Now, this is probably one of the most underrated tasks of a designer. Once the design is approved, we prepare the artwork in your packaging’s format. It is a very technical part of design and often some of the best designers in the world will leave this to a packaging design specialist, known for their fine-tooth comb approach and meticulous attention to detail.Reprographics artwork files on a packaging artwork cutter shown with colour separations for colour management

Step 4: Reprographics & Proofing

Step in technical team member number two. This is a necessary step to get your artwork ready for print. Colour accuracy is checked to ensure your packaging will look exactly the same no matter when the print run occurs.

Step 5: Mock-Ups & 3Ds

We all know the importance of consumer research. Before taking your product to the market, some of our clients test the packaging design to target focus groups. Brands invest in Mock-up’s in order to use them as physical assets in pitches and presentations to key buyers, ensuring the packaging is right before committing to print. Packaging mock-ups can also be a great asset to marketing activities during the build up to product launch. Although we would recommend mock ups to our clients, for those on a tight budget a similar effect for marketing can be achieved using 3D visuals, so this may be a good alternative for you.

Step 6: Print

Well done if you’ve got this far – you’re almost there! There are hundreds of packaging management companies that can help bring your product to market so we understand it can be quite overwhelming choosing a print supplier. Before making a decision speak to your creative design agency, they might be able to refer you to one of their trusted partners.

The end?

At DCP we believe there is never really an end to the packaging journey. If your product is successful, you’re likely to expand your range or enter new markets. In both cases, you’ll need a new or adapted packaging design. Read here why it is important to adapt to your markets.
