It’s true, Packaging is our world. There’s not a day goes by that we aren’t inspired by the world of packaging design. But often designers forget somewhere along the way exactly who they are designing for and the product gets lost in the increasing noise of retailer shelves and e-commerce sites.

So, what are the hot design trends that will surely capture today’s fussy consumer? And what can you expect to see the team at DCP following this year? Let’s take a closer look at some of the very best packaging design trends 2017…

1. Innocence

A whimsical trend that takes you back to childhood scenes with illustrative characters, colourful patterns and quirky hand drawn designs. As the millennial generation grows into one of the largest consumer demographics this trend seeks to capture their childhood imagination with a sense of familiarity and nostalgia for the past.

2. Less is More

I don’t think there will ever be a year when minimalist packaging design doesn’t make it into the top trends, but 2017 see’s a more luxe feel to the less is more style. Luxurious finishes, foil wraps, ombre colourways, spot metallic with simple sentences, small words and fine, clean font. The beauty and cosmetics industry have been mastering this trend for some time but 2017 will see it infiltrate wider industries. This packaging design stands out because they hold back, they don’t shout for your attention but somehow capture it.

3. Bold Repeat Pattern

When done well a beautiful example of striking visual design. It can make the product immediately eye-catching and consumers may be more drawn to it on the shelf. Some research even suggests it can help create a memory for the consumer, making your product leave a lasting impression and a sense of familiarity.

4. Hand Lettering

In saturated retail spaces, unique packaging can be the difference between being noticed and blending in with the competition. Hand lettering is becoming the go to packaging design trend 2017 for many popular brands and retailers. The unique look and feel and the individuality of the lettering can create a connection with the consumer, setting it apart from more digitally created designs.

5. Abstract Mixed Media

One of our favourite trends. Very Matisse-esque and can almost look like the designer took out a pair of scissors and experimented for a few hours. However, most graphics are digitally produced and the use of striking colour contrasts really makes this the packaging design trend for the alternative millennial shopper and consequently the alternative brand. With 52% of US food shoppers drawn to packaging with unusual or eye-catching designs its one not to miss for 2017.

6. E-commerce Considerations

With many consumers accepting that in 10 years’ time all their shopping will be done online it’s only right that brands focus on how their product packaging delivers through e-commerce channels. In 2017, Mintel Global Packaging team believe that the in-store-to-home experience will become a core part of the packaging design brief.

Hopefully, we’ve given you some food for thought with our recap of packaging design trends 2017! When it comes to product packaging trends may come and go, but true market research and a real understanding of your consumer should always be at the heart of your packaging design strategy, be it this year or 2050.
