THE CHALLENGE

We’re excited about launching our new range of dog foods. We have our draft packaging design but it’s nowhere near ready for print. Can you help?

Who are Pero?

Pero is a well-loved brand in the natural pet food industry. Based at the foothills of Snowdonia National Park, the company have built a reputation for delivering natural recipes of the finest quality whilst also being strongly against animal testing and cruelty.

With such strong credentials, it was important that the packaging represented the quality of the food and supported the ethos of the company.

It’s no secret that competition is fierce in the pet food sector. The power of packaging to influence purchasing behaviour in-store makes it a crucial part of the tangible brand experience.

What did we do?

We took the initial design files to create print-ready reprographic files for 16 SKUs across the Adult Dog range.

From working with packaging for years we know that artwork can look very different on screen than on finished substrates.

On viewing the initial design files, it was clear we needed to sit with the team and determine what they believed to be the important claims for the end consumer.

The Pero range consists of varied flexible plastic packaging formats all with a gloss finish. We added highlighting features to the design such as spot matt varnish and a specialised metallic ink that emphasised different product colourways.

“It’s always nice to be involved with a project from the start, but a lot of our clients come to us when their concept has been realised and they’re ready to print. Many agencies have great design functions but technical reprographic expertise isn’t offered.

It’s easy for designers to visually present a beautiful concept, but what many brands don’t realise is the amount of work needed behind the scenes to create the physical, tangible result.”

To give the product the best chance when pitching to retailers and to help the product sell online we provided 3D mock-ups of all the finalised designs, highlighting the spot matt varnish effect on the bags. We also worked on packaging translations and typesetting for Pero’s launch in international markets.
